(starting salary is around 65k aud here).

i do love the course and student teaching, but it's hard teaching pretty much a full load on placement while also having to work to support myself outside of that. i'm really looking forward to not being broke as hell next year. u.s. teachers, what was life like while you were student teaching? how did you balance it with other stuff?

When I was student teaching, I had no life because I was in a tough school, so tough it had a police substation at the school, and I taught seniors who were struggling to graduate. Of course, I took it on myself to save all my students. I also created all my lessons from scratch because I'm a perfectionist. I suggest using other people's stuff if you can.

I lost a ton of weight because worked 12+ hour days and often forgot to eat! My school had no food for vegetarians, so I was screwed.

hell. did you have much/any choice where you were placed? my last placement i wrote all my own lesson plans as well, which was insanely time consuming and nearly broke me. this sounds worse though. at least i only have one placement left!

Yeah, I chose that school (no one else wanted it, lol) because I figured the tougher my student teaching experience was, the better prepared I'd be for the job. I think I was right.

Thanks! This is only my second year in the profession, and I got cut last year, so it's extremely gratifying to know I can make everything better next year. I'll have one new prep and one old, which feels good.

also happy teacher appreciation day/week/whatever

hope y'all enjoy the token gestures your ptso or whatever gives you. i had a baggie with some tootsie rolls and bubble gum in my box yesterday, righteous.

i'm quite possibly leaving the profession at the end of this school year. taking a year off, at the very least. i will miss the several kids whom i made a difference for, but there is a lot of grind, stress, anxiety, frustration before you see that payout. i'm not sure it's worth it.

never heard of LEAPS but i make bank with my summer camp. i get some other teacher friends onboard, put flyers up at the school i work at, and get like 30 kids @$280/week. only need to do ~4 weeks and i'm way set all summer with savings+life & travel expenses.

so LEAPS is a tennessee thing but i would imagine most states have funding for after-school supervision/activities which would include summer stuff

Summer school or camps is definitely the way to go.

I also add more skype coaching in summer. I tend to work as much or more in summer than I do during the year.

I'm presenting at a conference as well.

I haven't but a friend of mine has been doing that as his main gig for a while now. I'll try to find the name of the company.

Are there any boarders working in private schools that could put me in touch with the admin?

I would like to set up summer study abroad programs for Chinese students but have been having trouble getting in touch at the few places I tried contacting in my home town.

Not limited to the US, the UK, Australia, or Canada would definitely be workable too.
