oh yeah, good point. I guess I kinda filter these stories through a Philly lens where there's not much vc compared to other cities in comparable size and the VC that does exist is just a huge mystery to me.

Just doing a little googling and found out bird is coming to Baltimore which I cannot imagine will be a smooth debut

These came to my city recently. We've also got a bikeshare and some other public transport programs, so at first I liked this idea a lot as another piece of the puzzle to get cars off the road. But the deployment was a mess, and Bird in particular was pretty openly hostile to city government while helping themselves to public spaces and infrastructure. So it's soured me on these quite a bit.

hold your horses milk, from what im reading $600 is damn near impossible to make in a night. that’d be 30 of the most difficult to find scooters, which seem to be wastes of time because its people hoarding or hiding them on purpose to drive up the bounty. my guess is that people average $40-$100 a night

i think bird can help people reduce their reliance on cars, and that's great, but people are also justified in being skeptical considering silicon valley's track record of skirting regulations and the incentives involved here. i like riding these things every now and then, though i mostly rely on bikeshare for getting around (which i found out was recently bought out by lyft, so that might not be ideal either).

i had no idea about the treasure-hunting aspect of this. that seems bad.

sure, except for the part where they're relying on underpaid "independent contractors" to find/charge/repair them at night with poorly thought out guidelines and support

Yeah.

The idea of "job creation" for a guy to wander around at 3 am to find scooters to make transport slightly easier for rich people is pretty depressing.

The idea that the scooter "users" can just abandon their vehicles wherever and not worry cause a poor guy will come find it in the dead of night. Awesome.

Can't believe no one has mentioned how exciting it is to discover new anorak pop band Bird Scooter in 2018.

yeah not to mention the problems this could bring up when the charger comes to pick up a scooter thats on private property and perhaps the owner of the property or a neighbor doesnt know why this rando is coming around and taking a scooter off the porch? apparently bird was informed that chargers need uniforms to help with this issue and their response was “dont worry we’ll be swagging you out soon!!”

Is there a reason why these mostly seem to exist in the south/midwest?

(and California of course)

These are probably Lime--they also have a scooter fleet in certain cities and get money from Uber and Google, among others.

DC got the bikes in the fall, and while some are still around, they seem to have been a trial run for gathering data on where to place the scooters around town.

this seems like a terrible idea but the thought of sidewalks littered with scooters that people just abandoned as soon as they got close enough to their destination is kind of hilarious (until it becomes reality)

While i fully support destroying these, lithium batteries and other assorted plastic junk probably shouldn't end up in our waterways

Smash em up if you want though. Some play an automated message about calling the police if you move one without paying, but they don't actually do anything.
