Probably gonna get a generic office job back in the big apple

Zoning out for eight hours is good for preserving your brain to write in the evenings and I don't think much will be as soulcrushing as this next month

Around a year ago I honestly entertained becoming certified in computer repair and just doing that for the rest of my life

I worked in Katmai NP in Alaska last summer and they were really understaffed and the manager said they had a hard time finding people to fill basic maintenance positions which pay like $25/hour. I think if you know how to work the USAjobs system you could get a job. Also I met a lot of interp rangers who were just there for the season and had gotten the job because they had a 4-year degree in something tangentially related to the environment. Being an interp ranger seems sick. But it's seasonal.

edit: in Katmai there's a privately-run lodge inside the park that you can work at if you aren't a US citizen; you get free housing and you're in the middle of the park

in my experience the forest service is even more lax in their hiring process and most employees smoke a lot of weed

i feel like screens are ubiquitous now though. like my job was a lot more drawing and site visits 15 years ago and now it’s mostly conference calls and spreadsheets.

i don’t want to switch careers but i could definitely use some more outdoor time - maybe volunteer for a parks thing or do some gardening?

physical labor is for the young and healthy. you develop a bad back or get an injury and that dream job has turned into a nightmare. you can pretty much be an office drone with any number of physical ailments. embrace the security.

don’t get me wrong, it’s chill. and most of the time the lab work is a good change of pace, i enjoy analyzing chloroplast DNA sequences after being in a canoe and dealing with stinky muskgrass : )
