you aren't dying.

i had a weird growth on my upper palette a couple years back i had removed that i was 100% convinced was a malignant tumor. it was not.

but then i got laid off a couple weeks afterwards, so you might lose your job.

At my 28th birthday I said to a crowd of people "Well, looks like I wasn't talented enough to die at 27!" and only one person laughed.

I have this done routinely; I think I'm up to 6?. I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure Melanoma falls under that "very high mortality if you don't get check-ups/biopsies, but negligible if you do.". I fall into a high risk pool for melanoma based on some nonsense a doctor told me, but they basically insinuated that that makes it more likely that I'll catch anything abnormal.

Somewhat unrelated: I had one Doctor who was fairly callous/aggressive in his biopsy and it actually upset me a good deal. Basically, I had been used to getting shave biopsies (shave the top and see if they need to do anything more invasive), but he decided that he might as well just go ahead and do the more invasive biopsy (punch-out) incase it was more serious. As he was having me sign off on the procedure he was intentionally vague about the type he was having me sign off on and they kind of took me by surprise. So now I have a scar on my right arm that I really hate. The next derm I went to was like "Woah. You had a malignant one there?" and I told her that it came back benign and she was shocked that someone would do that kind of biopsy as a first option. Anyways... you're probably fine.

Wear sunscreen all the time everyone

Hell yeah (on wearing sunscreen all the time) tex! Also I read about the punch out one after I was done and it sounds like no fun! I had the shave one thankfully. My dermatologist was nice, it all happened very quickly.

had one of these done a few years ago on my outer calf and they turned it into a fucking teaching session for the dermatology surgery fellow. could have been a punch biopsy i'm convinced but they 'wanted to make sure they got it all'. 2 hours later and a now with a 4 inch scar down my calf its removed and was nothing.

Also on the sunscreen shit. A lot of brands are kind of bullshit, but I've had multiple derms recommend this one specifically and apparently even the notably beautiful ZAC FRIGGIN EFRON touts it.

I had a basal cell carcinoma taken off my forehead with a mohs surgery. They cut a 2 inch diameter circle section out of my head down to the muscle and had to do a bunch of relief cuts in order to get enough skin to wrench the wound shut and stitch it. The skin around my head was so tight for a couple months it felt like I was wearing an undersized hat all the time. Now I have a large backward L shaped scar on my forehead forever.

If you want to see some harrowing shit GIS "mohs surgery face". When they showed me a mirror so I could look at the giant crater in my head I went into shock. The procedure is to have some of your face cut off, then you wait in the room for them to biopsy the flap of skin and make sure they got it all, then the doctor comes back and says "i need to cut some more of your face off" and you do it all over again and again until they get everything. It took almost all day.

Wear sunscreen every day!
