honestly i'm not huge on them

the ranking of the big four probably goes new order > omd > tears for fears > depeche mode for me at this point

it always seemed like, even for '80s synth pop, one of the most archly dramatic genres of all time, DM were nearly unbearably histrionic in ways that omd or new order were winkingly operating within

the Music for the Masses->Violator->Songs of Faith and Devotion run is where it's at for me. Don't care for too much outside of that era. But holy shit Violator is a great fucking record.

They are fine but beyond their singles it's hard to find a reason to like them.

Their singles rule so hard though.

Definitely resent my dad a bit for only playing them in the car when I was growing up.

The partnership of Gore and Wilder with Gahan's voice from 83-93 is one of my favorite runs, peaking with Black Celebration-Masses-Violator-SoFaD. I give every new record way more attention than they deserve.

I became a fan via 101, so those versions of the 80s material are still my favs. Violator is perfect.

101 was my main primer too so i feel the same way. the little YEAHs and grunts are canon for me.

the triple meaning of the title was a real slow burn don don too. 101st and final show on that tour. 101 being a highway near the venue, with a significant amount of their material from those days being about driving, and of course 101 = primer or intro.

bartender at the bar next to my house has a depeche mode sticker on his dodge d-50

i has never seen a depche mode sticker on a car before. he's annoying and i think he does coke/meth/adderal or something because he comes at you at an 11. we call him depeche and will often go somewhere else if his truck is there.

i didn't get into new order until like 2 years ago. they're fucking great. brotherhood, power corruption & lies, technique, low-life and movement are all fantastic records. i started with power corruption & lies, and then brotherhood. they're all great, but i think i like brotherhood the most.

You need to listen to Substance then. Hearing them as a singles band rather than an album band gives you a completely different experience. That and the fact that most singles aren't on the albums, and those that are are different edits/takes.

Depeche Mode are up there w/New Order, the Cure and the Smiths for me.

I happened to be watching this local scholastic quiz bowl thing on the PBS station here and one of the questions was "This song by this band is one of the defining examples of the genre synth-pop. Name the band and the song," and they played a clip of "Personal Jesus" to blank stares from each of the high school teams. Finally, one of them buzzes in and says in a halting voice, "David...Bowie?"

I've never felt so old in my life.
